- Friday will be a busy day as Boston College and Notre Dame will meet twice at two locations. Game two will now be at 12:30 PM ET and then the teams will meet at Fenway Park for a primetime matchup on ACC Network, which could have massive postseason implications.
Notre Dame took game one 5-1 and moved into seventh place in the ACC, which is important as the 7-seed would avoid the Wake Forest pod. If you haven’t followed college baseball, Wake Forest is currently 44-8 and 21-6 in ACC and ranked No. 1 in the country.
As it relates to Notre Dame’s standing for the NCAA Tourney, the Irish secured at least a .500 record in ACC, but it’s unknown how much Tuesday’s loss to 9-39 Northwestern means in the big picture. A series win seems like it would clinch a spot in the Field of 64, but the NCAA has blatantly hosed the Irish the last two years, so who knows......
- LHP Aidan Tyrell and RHP Radek Birkholz threw a masterful game on Thursday. The two combined to give up eight hits, one run, but more importantly, the Eagles only walked once and struck out eight times. Notre Dame didn’t give Boston College free base runners and will need to do that again on Friday.
Birkholz has been on fire in his last five appearances going 11.2 IP, one hit, one run and 10 strikeouts.
- At the plate, Notre Dame got hits and timely hits, but they’ll need to be a little sharper on the basepaths. Casey Kmet was picked off and every base matters given the inconsistent at-bats this year.
That said, Notre Dame batted .323 (10-for-31), including .308 with runners on and .286 with runners in scoring position.
Vinny Martinez stayed hot with two hits while TJ Williams and Kmet also recorded two hits. Williams getting hot would be significant as the leadoff spot has been an issue all year. The Irish also recorded five doubles on Thursday night, which is somewhat rare for this group. More of that and Notre Dame could be looking at a weekend sweep.
