As the world of College Football scouting continues to expand, Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Football program officially bolstered their staff on Wednesday with the addition of Matt Jansen as the Irish’s new Director of Scouting.
Jansen comes to South Bend from West Virginia, where he’s been since 2019. Current Irish offensive coordinator Gerad Parker spent two seasons in Morgantown with Jansen in 2020 and 2021 before himself coming to Notre Dame last season.
Jansen’s role isn’t going to be focused on high school scouting/recruiting as much as scouting opponents, evaluating potential transfer portal targets and self-scout.
“People in the industry know what he’s really good at,” one source said.
“His focus is the portal, opponent scouting, our own roster.”
While Jansen’s addition alone with help the Irish, his presence will also free up other staff members to focus on their strengths, improving the overall scouting department simply by being better at what they all do best.
Jansen started at West Virginia as a player personnel and recruiting assistant before eventually being elevated to Director of Personnel and Scouting.
Prior to arriving in Morgantown, he was the college scouting coordinator for the Houston Texans from 2015-18 and player personnel assistant with the Baltimore Ravens from 2013-15. He started his career as a student assistant at Texas Tech and did an internship with the Texans from 2011-13.
