The 20-hour car ride was worth it.

Jarquez Carter‍ made his first journey up to Notre Dame for last week’s Grill & Chill and the 2025 Florida defensive tackle was not disappointed.

“I liked it,” the Newberry High School star said. “I liked it very much. All the coaching staff, Coach (Al) Washington.

“I got to connect with other people in my class. Got to just connect with the coaches and the recruiting staff.”

Carter felt very comfortable around the other visiting recruits.

“They felt like my teammates back at home,” he said. “I was just used to them. And you've got Davion (Dixon), one of my other homeboys, so that made it easier for me.”

Dixon is a fellow Florida defensive tackle who Carter knows from back home. Dixon committed to the Irish back in April and is trying to get the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Carter to join him.

“He was saying we'll make a dynamic duo,” Carter said of Dixon’s message.

The coaches encouraged Carter to get to know the other recruits.

“They really wanted me to connect with other people in my class, get a good feeling with them,” said Carter. “They were just asking me if I like the environment of the school. It was just giving me good feelings and stuff about the school.”

The academic opportunities at Notre Dame stood out as well.

“They were telling us that it's really a small school,” Carter explained. “There are only like 8,000 students, so you really get a lot of one-on-one talk with the teachers and stuff. I like hearing stuff like that.”

Carter, who also has offers from schools like Miami, Penn State and Louisville among several others, isn’t exactly sure what’s next for him and the Irish.

“I'm always going to keep in contact with them,” he said. “I'll try to come to one of the games. It's like 20 hours away from home, but I'll still try to come up.”

Because of distance, Carter isn’t sure what schools he may hit this fall for games other than Florida.

Still, it’s obvious Notre Dame has his attention.

“It just felt like I was at home. I just liked the whole environment about it.”
