Notre Dame clearly helped itself with Garrett Sundra‍ during the 2024 Virginia power forward’s official visit to South Bend last week.

“It was great,” Sundra told Irish Sports Daily. “I had a great time with the coaches and everyone there. The campus is beautiful.

“We met with a lady in admissions and then we met with a Business professor, Chris Stevens. which was super cool. He played at Notre Dame back in the day and was a very successful guy. It was cool to meet with him and just hear what he had to say about the school.”

The 6-foot-10, 215-pounder also enjoyed the campus tour and the opportunity to spend time with head coach Micah Shrewsberry and his staff.

“We had a great tour, saw the football field and then we got to go see a practice with Coach Shrews and the team,” Sundra said. “It was really cool to see their last practice of the year. Then we got to see the Joyce Center, which was great. It was awesome. It was under construction, but it's still a pretty cool gym.”

He had the opportunity to meet with the athletic trainer and strength coach while also hearing exactly where the staff sees him fitting in the program.

“Some of the things they said were they see me at the elbows and the logos, so kind the short corner to the elbow, just working on my game and then me working on my ballhandling,” Sundra explained. “I'd say I'm a pretty good shooter right now, so they weren't too picky about that, but they said that I should really work on my short post game, make that excellent.”

The Paul VI Catholic star called the steak he had for dinner that evening “phenomenal.”

“The next morning, woke up, had breakfast, and then met with Coach Shrews a final goodbye, which was really good to talk to him, just me and my family,” Sundra said.

The entire coaching staff made a tremendous impression.

“I would just say Coach Shrews' knowledge about the game, spending a lot of time in the NBA with the Celtics, his knowledge about the game is really, really cool to see as well as all the coaches,” he said. “I would say all of them, Coach (Kyle) Getter, Coach (Matt) Farrelly, all the way down the line are, are all very, very smart people.”

Sundra also has offers from schools like Butler, Iowa, Maryland, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Miami, Providence and Villanova among others.

On Monday, Sundra announced that he’ll be making his college choice public on Thursday afternoon.

One thing is sure, Notre Dame helped itself with the trip.

“I went into it with a really open mind and I came out loving it. I love the school. It's a very prestigious school, so I think I can get a lot out of a Notre Dame degree. That's what really impressed me the most, just talking to the professor and the Admissions and just hearing what they had to say. I already knew how talented the coaching staff is and how great they are. I think that was what I enjoyed the most.”
