After last week’s official visit to Notre Dame, it was obvious Garrett Sundra‍ was seriously considering making South Bend his future home.

On Thursday, the 2024 Virginia power forward did just that, announcing his commitment to the Irish.

“I would say just the coaching staff in general is phenomenal,” the 6-foot-10, 215-pounder told Irish Sports Daily of his decision.

Sundra joins IMG Academy guard Cole Certa to give head coach Micah Shrewsberry a pair of commits in the Class of 2024.

Shrewsberry clearly made a major impact on Sundra’s decision to choose Notre Dame over offers from schools like Villanova, Butler, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, Providence and others.

“I think Coach Shrews coaching in the NBA is something that not all coaches and not all schools have,” the Paul VI Catholic standout said. “Then, just the people that the Notre Dame coaches are off the court. They're all great people.

“Then, I'd say just Notre Dame the school in general. You can go a lot of places with a Notre Dame degree. It's a very, very, very great thing to have. I would say those are a couple of the main reasons. And then obviously the way Coach Shrews plays; shoots, lots of threes and kind of plays free basketball.”

Sundra believes his style will fit well in that system.

“Just a high-motor guy who likes to work hard, can shoot the ball well and takes pride in his defense,” he said of what Irish fans should expect from him.

During last week’s official, Sundra learned how the Notre Dame staff envisions him developing throughout his career.

“They see me at the elbows and the logos, so kind the short corner to the elbow, just working on my game and then me working on my ballhandling,” Sundra explained.

“I'd say I'm a pretty good shooter right now, so they weren't too picky about that, but they said that I should really work on my short post game, make that excellent.”

Coming out of the visit, Sundra was talking like somebody who may have found his future home.

“I went into it with a really open mind and I came out loving it,” he told ISD at the time. “I love the school. It's a very prestigious school, so I think I can get a lot out of a Notre Dame degree. That's what really impressed me the most, just talking to the professor and the Admissions and just hearing what they had to say. I already knew how talented the coaching staff is and how great they are. I think that was what I enjoyed the most.”

And now he’s excited to have found that home and to have the recruiting process behind him.

“It's a lot of stress off your shoulders. You can kind of relax. This process was so long and now it's kind of over, so you just focus on your senior year and on getting to that next level.”
