Notre Dame and Florida State will get a rubber match on Friday evening, and the winner will earn a spot in the ACC Championship game on Saturday night. Both programs won on their home court during the regular season, and the Seminoles have seen Notre Dame’s smaller lineup.
The Irish must handle the Seminoles length, athleticism, and ball pressure well to have a shot in this game. Florida State is a much deeper team, and it’s likely they will throw a lot of bodies at Notre Dame early in this match. The three-pointer is the great equalizer, and Notre Dame can make up ground if they are hitting.
Florida State lost by 12 in South Bend in February, and a large part of the loss was the Noles going 7-for-22 from the free throw line, while the Irish went 19-for-21. I wouldn’t expect Florida State to shoot 31 percent from the charity stripe again, so Notre Dame is going to need to figure out how to make up for the difference.
One area the Irish will need production is from the bench. Notre Dame got seven points from Martinas Geben and TJ Gibbs on Thursday night against Virginia, but will need Matt Ryan, and likely Gibbs to get a few more on Friday. The seven points scored by the bench were huge for Notre Dame, but in tournament play, any extra help could decide the game.
Notre Dame likely isn’t going to get 33 points and 13 boards from Colson this time around, and I believe this one centers around Matt Farrell. If the junior point guard and get going early offensively, it’s going to back the pressure off the ball and will allow the Irish to get into sets closer to the basket.
The winner will get the winner of North Carolina-Duke game on Saturday.
