Notre Dame Baseball Set to Ink Impressive 2024 Recruiting Class
Notre Dame baseball has spent the last year looking to keep the top Midwest prospects home and the Irish are expected to sign the No. 27 class (Perfect Game) in the country on Wednesday.
In fact, Notre Dame’s staff will send a strong message as the program will sign the top class in the Midwest (Group of 5 and Power 5 schools) and it will be the second highest ranked class in program history as it trails only the 2021 haul.
The Irish are expected to sign 16 players and the class starts at home as Saint Joseph (Ind.) outfielder Jayce Lee and Penn (Ind.) infielder RJ Cromartie were instrumental in Notre Dame’s success on the recruiting trail.
Lee, who has developed into one of the top players in the Midwest, if not the country, had a big summer and it was highlighted this fall as he was invited to the PBR All-American Game in Milwaukee last month. The Top 100 prospect was also named First Team 3A All-State after breaking a Saint Joe record with nine home runs in 2023.
Cromartie also had an impressive summer as several folks highlighted his final summer of travel ball as his best. That said, Cromartie played a significant role in Notre Dame’s recruiting efforts as he made sure to show up to show recruits around campus just about every weekend the Irish staff hosted top prospects. If Notre Dame fans are looking for a comparison, Cromartie put in a Blake Fisher-type of effort on the recruiting trail, which was needed as Shawn Stiffler and company got their feet under them.
Notre Dame also continued its strong work at the nation’s top baseball program as Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (Mich.) INF Parker Brzustewicz will sign with the Irish. Brzustewicz hit .409 with last spring and was part of the OLSM team that won 84 games in a row, which was just shy of the national record of 89 games set by Portsmouth (N.H.) in 2012.
Center Grove (Ind.) infielder Noah Coy is the latest addition to the class and he’s a two-sport star as he’s currently the all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns at the Indiana powerhouse. And while he’s coming to South Bend for baseball, it’s hard not to point out Coy has recorded 83 catches for 1,171 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior.
The class will also feature seven pitchers, including in-state RHP Cameron Sullivan who struck out 78 and finished 2023 with an ERA of 1.55 in 40.2 IP.
RHP Chase Van Ameyde is a two-way player who has one of the most unique pitching deliveries in the country, but he also brings power from the plate.
Seth Voltz will have one of the largest pitching groups from a size standpoint in the country moving forward as Notre Dame signed Dennis Helwig (6’7) and Hagan Ward (6’7) a year ago and will add another 6-foot-7 pitcher in Anderson Hayes out of Oconomowoc (Wis.) and St Mark’s (Mass.) RHP Oisin Lee, who checks in at 6-foot-6.
Notre Dame prioritized athleticism, character and compete level in this class as the ACC is unforgiving. Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Logan Robbins led the charge as it was clear there was a plan to recruit not only specific areas of the Midwest, but also the country. Notre Dame made a clear effort to keep the top players in Indiana home, but also continued to make its presence felt in surrounding states and Wisconsin.
The Northeast has always been kind to the Irish and Notre Dame even tapped into South Carolina to land Jaden Knight, who hit .333 in the spring.
