Notre Dame WR Tobias Merriweather Headed to Transfer Portal

Notre Dame receiver Tobias Merriweather has announced his intentions to enter the Transfer Portal following two seasons in the blue and gold and a day after the Irish parted ways with receivers coach Chansi Stuckey.

“I want to thank Coach Freeman and this staff for giving me a chance to fulfill my dreams of playing college football,” Merriweather said in a statement. “I am grateful for my time at the University of Notre Dame and all it has offered me. I feel blessed to have formed friendships that will last a lifetime.

“After careful consideration, consultation with my family and prayer, I have decided to seek an opportunity that best fits me and I will be entering the Transfer Portal.”

The Washington native instantly became a fan favorite in the hours and days after Brian Kelly’s abrupt departure following the 2021 season as his in-home visit will go down in recruiting folklore.

Merriweather arrived at Notre Dame and appeared in seven games as a true freshman. The 6-foot-4, 204-pounder recorded just one catch in 2022, but it was a memorable one as it was a 41-yard scoring strike from Drew Pyne against Stanford.

Yet, Merriweather would struggle to find consistency during his sophomore year despite playing the second most snaps out of Notre Dame’s young receiving corps. Merriweather recorded the lowest PFF grade out of the Irish receivers while also having the highest drop rate.

Merriweather would total 14 receptions for 284 yards and two scores in 12 regular season games in year two. His sophomore season would be highlighted by three catches for 91 yards and one touchdown against Central Michigan, which would be season highs for Merriweather. He would again flash his immense potential against Wake Forest with a 35-yard touchdown snag.

As a recruit, Merriweather was a four-star prospect by the three main evaluation services (247, Rivals and ESPN) and by ISD’s Jamie Uyeyama. Merriweather chose the Irish over offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah, Utah State, Washington and Washington State.

With Merriweather’s decision, Notre Dame will not have a receiver from 2022 recruiting class as he was the lone signee following Del Alexander’s departure, so it would be safe to assume the staff will be aggressive in looking for a veteran portal receiver (or two) to at minimum boost the depth in the room.
