Notre Dame safety Antonio Carter II arrived on campus in June and will leave the program less than six months later as he has announced his intention to enter the Transfer Portal.

“I am grateful for my Notre Dame experience,” Carter said in a statement. “I will always have appreciation for the people I met during my time here, specifically my teammates and coaches.

“I have made the decision to enter the Transfer Portal. I look forward to finding an opportunity that is the best overall fit for me as I look to reach my goals on the field.”

He is the second safety to announce plans to transfer as Ramon Henderson entered the portal as a graduate transfer on Thursday afternoon.

Carter arrived at Notre Dame as a graduate transfer from Rhode Island where he recorded 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one interception.

In 2023, Carter didn’t quite crack the rotation, but he did play as a reserve safety and had a significant role on special teams. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder recorded eight tackles and recovered one fumble for the Irish.

Carter chose the Irish over LSU, Ole Miss and Wisconsin last spring.

As for the safety room, Ben Minich, Adon Shuler, Luke Talich and Xavier Watts are on the roster with remaining eligibility. Watts has yet to decide on his future after leading the nation in interceptions in 2023.
