Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman Says Goodbye, Opts Out of Sun Bowl
Sam Hartman’s collegiate career has come to an end as the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder released a video thanking Wake Forest, Notre Dame and college football.
Hartman has also decided not to play in the 2023 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and sophomore quarterback Steve Angeli will start for the Irish.
“To college football, you’ve been my world as long as I can remember - dreaming as a kid of the big games and taking the field with thousands of fans screaming my name,” Hartman said in a video. “Although, some games didn’t go my way and some moments left unsettled, I cherish you and the memories you allowed me to create through hardship and defeat, mentors and lessons and unselfish teammates to help guide me along the way.
“Although my journey is not yet finished, a part of me will always be with you. Thank you for allowing me to stick around and I hope you had as much fun as I did.”

The Charlotte native may have spent just one season with Notre Dame, but it was one filled with what seemed like excitement - good or bad - at every turn.
Hartman completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Fighting Irish as he led Notre Dame to a record of 9-3.
Notre Dame’s offense saw Hartman top the 300-yard mark just once (Central Michigan), but he did throw for over 250 yards five times, including his final game inside Notre Dame Stadium where he threw for 277 yards and four touchdowns against Wake Forest.
Hartman will finish his career with 15,656 passing yards, 134 touchdowns and 49 interceptions while also adding another 978 yards on the ground and 20 more scores.
When it comes to Hartman’s national standing, the stats become even more impressive. Hartman will finish No. 5 in all-time passing yards as he trails Case Keenum, Timmy Chang, Landry Jones and Graham Harrell.
Hartman’s 134 passing touchdowns will finish No. 3 with Graham Harrell as only Case Keenum (155) and Kellen Moore rank ahead of him.
2021 was Hartman’s most productive season as he thew for 4,228 yards and scored 50 total touchdowns for Wake Forest.
