Portal Scouting Notes | Beaux Collins
Notre Dame needed a boundary receiver in the transfer portal last year. It didn’t work out for them, but they’re trying again this year with former Clemson receiver Beaux Collins as a top target.
Collins was a blue-chip recruit who started 27 games and looked like he was on his way to a big career after an impressive freshman debut. It never quite materialized that way for him and the deficiencies of the Clemson offense as a whole didn’t help.
He hasn’t had elite production, but he’s a legitimate starter who is capable of plugging into the boundary and making plays.
Clemson WR Beaux Collins
- 6-3 210
- multi-year starter
- Flashes on the boundary by winning back shoulder
- His best is good, large catch radius
- 12.5 drop percentage, will drop some easy ones
- Not a burner, but can get deep and win contested
- 9 of 16 on contested catches in ‘23
- doesn’t have super quick feet, but beats press with strength and can box out well
- Hasn’t been someone who can provide a ton of YAC, won’t make defenders miss often
- 17.0 per reception in ‘22 with more deep targets from DJ Uiagalelei
- 4.3 short shuttle and 35.1 inch vert as a recruit
I think Collins is capable of more than he showed at Clemson and view him as a similar player to former Notre Dame receiver Javon McKinley. His issues were very similar to Collins’ at Clemson when McKinley was stuck as a backup for four years at Notre Dame, but he proved he was capable of more during his final season with the Irish when he became a big play threat who could win jump balls down the field.
That’s the best case scenario with Collins and he’s shown flashes on becoming that player.
The idea of him as the next Tee Higgins has come and gone, but he still has shown a valuable skill set as a big body receiver who can be an effective starter on the boundary with the potential to be more than that.
