Top In-State DE Damien Shanklin Impressed with Notre Dame Once Again
Notre Dame held its first Junior Day of 2024 on Saturday and the visitor list was a loaded one despite the challenges of the Midwest weather.
One of the headliners was 2025 Warren Central (Ind.) defensive end Damien Shanklin, who has become almost a regular in South Bend over the last few months. The four-star prospect took in multiple games in the fall and then returned last month for bowl practice in addition to Saturday’s visit.
On this visit, Shanklin was able to spend quality time with defensive line coach Al Washington and head coach Marcus Freeman.
The message from the Notre Dame staff was simple and relatable to the Indianapolis native.
“I like both coaches a lot because everything that they say, I can actually relate to,” Shanklin told ISD. “With both coaches talking to me, it’s more about life after football, which set standards for me and also others.”
In addition to several key targets, Shanklin was able to get around several 2025 commits. And as you’d expect, quarterback commit Deuce Knight has been recruiting Shanklin and the two enjoyed catching up on Saturday.
“With the commits, I feel like the bond is getting closer,” Shanklin said. “The bond with me and Deuce has been getting stronger, which means a lot.”
Shanklin has experienced the atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium, but on Saturday, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was able to take in a hockey game inside Compton Family Ice Arena.
The fans left a lasting impression once again and is one of the reasons Shanklin keeps coming back to Notre Dame.
“When I go to a place like Notre Dame, the fans are like no other,” said Shanklin. “It’s an amazing atmosphere.”
