THOUGHTS

Notre Dame and Georgia Tech have played two entertaining games this season as the Irish took game one in Atlanta in overtime before winning by three at home last month.

In both games, Notre Dame dominated the glass and the Irish need to do the same on Tuesday. The Irish recorded 16 offensive rebounds last month and it was the difference down the stretch. Georgia Tech has out-rebounded opponents since that game by over 11 per game.

Notre Dame will also need to shoot the three well in this one. The Irish went 7-for-17 during Saturday’s loss to Virginia Tech, but Braeden Shrewsberry went 0-for-2. Now, Julian Roper II added two threes, but Shrewsberry needs to get it going if Notre Dame wants to hang around in D.C. for a few days.

Carey Booth will also need to continue to be aggressive on the offensive end. The freshman forward continues to be a bit inconsistent and disappears at times while also showing he can score in spurts. If Booth can find that middle ground, it would benefit the Irish offense greatly.

On the defensive end, Notre Dame will need to focus on freshman point guard Naithan George. George Tech goes as he goes most nights and George is capable of putting up Markus Burton numbers in points while also being dangerous as a playmaker. In the first meeting, George scored just nine points, but added 11 assists. Notre Dame shut him down in game two as he finished with five points and four assists.

The teams also tied for 12th place in the ACC and while Notre Dame won both regular season games, the Yellow Jackets beat three ranked teams this season. Notre Dame did not beat a ranked team in Micah Shrewsberry’s first regular season.

That said, if Notre Dame can win the boards and contain George, the Irish should advance to Wednesday.
