WHAT TO WATCH
There’s no spinning Friday night’s loss to Pitt. It was another bad one for the Irish, a program fighting to extend its season. Notre Dame batted just 6-for-30 (.200) and a lousy .182 with runners on base. The Irish seemed to be waiting for someone to take over the game, but no one stepped up.
TJ Williams, Jack Penney and Estevan Moreno combined to go 0-for-11 from the plate. Notre Dame can’t afford to have three of its first four batters to have off nights, especially in a game where postseason play is on the line. Yet, it’s one of the reasons they are in this position.
On the flip side, Notre Dame’s pitchers came to play. Matt Bedford and Ricky Reeth combined to give up nine hits, three runs while striking out eight. It was more than a respectable outing, as you should win frequently, giving up just three runs in ACC play.
As for Saturday, Notre Dame will need to find a way to hit the baseball. Home runs are nice, but the Irish have to hit gaps and start to move more runners to apply some pressure on Pitt. The Irish only put pressure on Pitt in the eighth inning on Friday and ended the inning with one run, while leaving runners on second and third.
A win will keep the ACC Tournament in play, but a loss would be a significant dent to making the field of 12 teams in Charlotte.
