WHAT TO WATCH
The series against Toledo exam week scheduling 101 by Notre Dame and the ACC. Each team in the ACC has played a non-conference series on the weekend of exams this season, which won’t impact Notre Dame’s race to qualify for the ACC Tournament. As of today, Notre Dame would be one of two programs out of the tournament.
As for the game, Notre Dame’s seniors have two games left at Frank Eck Stadium. They’ve seen a lot of wins in the park while also experiencing the struggles of the last two seasons after the highs of 2021 and 2022 seasons.
When you think of those who will be honored on Saturday, it’s a mixed bag as the graduate transfers didn’t quite leave their mark on the program to this point. David Glancy leads the team in home runs while Simon Baumgardt has been consistent at the plate and in the field. RHP Nate Hardman leads the Irish in appearances with 23 and six saves on the year.
For guys like TJ Williams, Brady Gumpf, Casey Kmet, Jackson Dennies and Matt Bedford, it has to be a bit bittersweet. They were on the team ranked No. 1 in the country in 2022, and now they are fighting to make it to the ACC Tournament two years later. Dennies hasn’t pitched since March 13 and had surgery recently, but his infectious energy hasn’t changed throughout the course of the year. Kmet knew this season wasn’t going to lead to a ton of playing time as he was coming off UCL surgery, but he’s grinded it out and been used as a pinch runner.
It’s a group of great kids, who could have easily mailed in this season in April, but they didn’t. They’ll have a chance to make some noise next weekend as the Irish will travel to Louisville, but for this weekend, Notre Dame sending them out the right way will be a memory that will last a long time.
