WHAT TO WATCH
Notre Dame had a disappointing Thursday as the Irish kept the door open for Boston College to jump them for the final spot in the ACC Tourney. As it stands, it appears Boston College would need to take two games from Clemson to jump the Irish if Notre Dame would drop game three on Friday. The x-factor here is the weather as there are storms on the East Coast, so it could impact the Boston College-Clemson series and Pitt-Miami series.
The Irish struggled at the plate in the two Thursday losses. Notre Dame was just 4-for-20 with runners on base despite hitting three home runs on the day, including two by David Glancy. In yesterday’s preview, we highlighted Estevan Moreno, Jack Penney and Simon Baumgardt as the three players the Irish needed to come through.
Penney had a strong game one by going 3-for-3 with an RBI, but then went 0-for-4 in the second game. Baumgardt went a combined 1-for-8 in the two games, while Moreno finished his day 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. Shawn Stiffler will need more from the trio on Friday.
Notre Dame recorded 10 hits in game one, but could not move runners. The Irish were held to just three hits in game two, which has been all too common at times this season.
Louisville entered the series with a potent offense and Notre Dame handled it well holding the Cardinals to five runs in both games. The issue was the Irish let Eddie King Jr. do whatever he wanted. King finished the day 4-for-7 with three home runs and five RBI. Now, King isn’t the guy who sticks out on the scouting report, but the Irish can’t one player beat them in a series with postseason play on the line.
