Notre Dame has put junior defensive linemen Aiden Gobaira and Tyson Ford on a medical scholarship, which was first reported by Jack Soble of Blue and Gold Illustrated and confirmed by a team spokesperson.

Gobaira, a native of Virginia, redshirted as a freshman and then tore his ACL in fall camp last August.

In 2022, Gobaira worked on Notre Dame’s scout team as a freshman and defensive coordinator Al Golden felt he was on the right track.

“Gobaira is doing good,” Golden said in October of 2022. “Scout work right now. But same thing, the weight room has really helped him.”

The former All-American Bowl selection picked Notre Dame over 16 other programs during his recruitment as he held offers from Arizona State, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others.

Ford, who an early recruiting statement in Marcus Freeman’s tenure as defensive coordinator, stepped away from the program in the spring to figure out his next move.

“He’s taking some personal time off just to figure out what he wants to do,” stated Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman in April.

The former four-star prospect, played in two games during his two seasons at Notre Dame and both came in 2023. Ford, a St. Louis native, saw his first game action against Tennessee State before appearing in the home finale in Notre Dame’s win over Wake Forest.

As a recruit, Ford was ranked as the consensus four-star and his highest rating was by Rivals.com at No. 105. overall.
