2025 P/K Erik Schmidt Returns To Notre Dame, Could Be Back Again

Erik Schmidt‍ was at Notre Dame for camp on Tuesday and after another good time in South Bend, it looks like the 2025 Wisconsin punter/kicker will be back again.

“It was really good,” Schmidt told Irish Sports Daily. “I had a good time.

“I did my punting and then I had a meeting with Coach (Marcus) Freeman, which was good. I had a meeting with Chad (Bowden). He talked about doing an official.”

The Marquette University High School standout has already been to Notre Dame multiple times and said he’ll “probably” be back for an official in the fall.

He’s already taken an official to Wisconsin and is taking another to Boston College this weekend. He doesn’t have any other official visits on the horizon other than Notre Dame.

He enjoyed his meeting with Freeman.

“It was good,” said Schmidt. “He just talked about the value of a Notre Dame education and the networking and opportunities that are going to come out of it. He really emphasized that.

“Super personable, really kind, really interested. Probably my favorite head coach that I've met.”

Bowden made a positive impression too.

“Great as well,” said Schmidt. “He is really good. He explained everything really well and had a lot to talk about, which is good.

Schmidt felt he did well during the camp and said he even hit the ceiling with at least one of his punts.

Irish special teams coordinator Marty Biagi was already high on Schmidt coming into the visit.

“He was the one who suggested doing the official,” Schmidt said of Biagi. “He was telling me how much he wants me and what I could bring to the program. He thinks that there's a lot of opportunity for me to play there.

For his part, Schmidt came in high on the Irish and said he left feeling the same, even “a little stronger.”

The Notre Dame coaches explained what coming to South Bend as a preferred walk-on would entail and why there’s a good chance that could change.

“They also explained the new rules that are going to be coming up in the next year,” said Schmidt. “They said that there probably won't be any more walk-ons and there's going to be a high chance for scholarship.

“(The NCAA) is thinking about changing the roster. It could change to anything, but people are predicting that it'll go to about 100 or maybe even 110 scholarships and then they might just not allow walk-ons, so everyone's on the scholarship.”

Waiting to take an official visit to Notre Dame in the fall could potentially push Schmidt’s decision timetable back…or it may not.

“It might,” said Schmidt. “I'm not really sure yet. I'm still trying to figure that out. They know I want to commit this summer.”

A summer decision wouldn’t rule the Irish out.

“I've been there enough to know what it's like there.”
