Notre Dame OL Charles Jagusah & DB Marty Auer Out for 2024 Season
Notre Dame left tackle Charles Jagusah will miss the 2024 campaign after tearing his right pectoralis muscle during Saturday night’s practice as the Irish practiced in shells.
Walk-on defensive back Marty Auer also tore his left ACL over the weekend and will also miss the 2024 season.
Jagusah is a massive loss for the Irish as he was slated to start at left tackle after making his first start in the Sun Bowl win over Oregon State. The Illinois native also worked at the position last fall on scout team.
“Scout team, I was pretty much doing only tackle, but with the twos I would do a little bit of guard with them when they really needed me,” stated Jagusah.
“I'd say I can do either, but I feel a little more comfortable at left, just because I did it in high school. But whatever they need me to do, I’ll do.”
It’s Jagusah's second significant injury. He suffered a PCL injury, which required surgery before he arrived at Notre Dame as a freshman.
“I’d say about halfway through the season, I started to be able to run better and move better,” Jagusah stated in March. “And it was a confidence thing, too. You have to be confident that you can push as hard as you need to on it.”
The 6-foot-7, 330-pounder appeared in two games in 2023 as he saw five snaps against Stanford before his start in the Sun Bowl (61 plays).
As for Notre Dame’s options, Aamil Wagner could slide over to left tackle and graduate student Tosh Baker could take over at right tackle. Baker played and started at left tackle during the 2021 season, so that’s an option as well.
The other scenario would be for Joe Rudolph to end the guard battle by letting Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler start, while moving Billy Schrauth from right guard to right tackle, assuming Wagner moves to the left side.
Freshman Anthonie Knapp has been working as the backup left tackle during the first week of camp.
