If you knew Northern Illinois’ defense, you knew that Notre Dame wasn’t going to have many opportunities to throw it deep.

They were 13th in EPA per dropback, 10th in passing success rate, and only three teams threw for over 200 yards on them in 2023. They didn’t get beat over the top very often and were ninth in the country in explosive pass plays against them.

That meant that every missed opportunity to not hit a big play was magnified.
