Film Don't Lie | Chaston Smith
There is no better defensive back coach in the country than Notre Dame’s Mike Mickens. No one identifies and develops talent better than him and Irish fans have seen it firsthand.
Blue-chip defensive back prospects have obviously noticed and Chaston Smith is the latest one to commit to Notre Dame. He has the physical and athletic profile that fits exactly what Mickens is looking for.
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 170
Projected Position: Cornerback
ISD Grade: 91 (4-star)
National Average Grade: 91.0 (4-star)
What he does best:
Smith is long and plays long. He’s patient in his pedal, uses his hands well to redirect receivers, and does a great job finishing through the catch point.
He has great recognition versus the screen game.
Smith is extremely physical. That shows with everything from block destruction, tackling, and with his jam.
What he needs to improve:
He sometimes will reach in press coverage and needs to improve his footwork there.
I’d love to see him close on the football quicker and get a bit more ball production.
What’s his ceiling?
Smith is another corner with size and length with projectable NFL traits. He has a very similar physical profile to curent Notre Dame corner Christian Gray, who also had to fill out, but had fantastic tools.
He has the skill set and physical profile that fits perfectly into Notre Dame’s defense and has the potential to develop into yet another high-level corner for the Irish. They just keep stacking them up.
Who he could be:
Current Notre Dame CB Christian Gray
