Marcus Freeman Signs Extension with Notre Dame

Notre Dame football has its head coach for the foreseeable future.

Per multiple ISD sources, we can confirm a report from Nicole Auerbach, that Marcus Freeman has signed a multi-year extension that will keep him at Notre Dame.

A source tells ISD it will be a four-year extension that will lock him in for six years, and the deal will also make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country. In addition to Freeman’s contract, Notre Dame is showing a commitment to make his staff salary pool in the upper echelon of college football as well as state-of-the-art operations, which includes the Shield Family Hall, which is already under construction.

"I am grateful for the support of the Board of Trustees, led by John Veihmeyer, President Fr. Bob Dowd, C.S.C., and Director of Athletics Pete Bevacqua,” stated Freeman. “The investment they continue to pour into our program is invaluable to our student-athletes and staff. This commitment goes well beyond myself, as they are dedicated to ensuring all aspects of our program are competitive within the upper echelon of college football."

Freeman, who is in this third season as head coach, has started his career 30-9, including going 11-4 against top 25 opponents.

The extension will also silence rumors surrounding Freeman as his name was linked with the Chicago Bears over the last few weeks.

“With team glory and with team success comes individual recognition and individual glory,” Freeman said last month. “I know and everyone hopefully in this program understands without everybody in this program accomplishing their roles that we’re not going to achieve what we want on the football field on Saturdays. When you do your job and everybody gets their job done and you have success, there are going to be certain individuals each week or certain parts of the year that have individual recognition and individual glory.

“I know, and we know it takes us all to achieve the success that we aspire to have. That, to me, is a reflection of how this program is playing and performing every day and on Saturdays.

Notre Dame will host Indiana in the first-ever college football playoff game on a college campus on Friday at 8:00 PM ET.
