Notre Dame Expected to Name Mike Martin Next General Manager

Notre Dame has found its next general manager, Mike Martin, who comes from the Detroit Lions, per an ISD source. 

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report. 

Martin has spent the last four seasons as the Lions director of scouting advancement and has played a significant role in turning around the Detroit franchise. While in Detroit, Martin’s role focused on working with collegiate and professional staff to enhance the Lion's ability to scout and build a roster. 

According to a source, Martin is a dynamic hire by Marcus Freeman and an ideal fit for what Notre Dame is looking for in the position. 

“Mike is an amazing person who will be an incredible force in recruiting, an amazing influence on developing Notre Dame young men, and he brings a great understanding of management,” said the source. “Mike is the kind of person who would light up the room when he entered in the NFL.” 

The former Vanderbilt defensive back spent 11 years with the Houston Texans as the assistant director of college scouting for four years, national scout for two seasons and a college scout for seven years. 

Martin’s first job in the NFL came with Tampa Bay. He spent two seasons as a scout before being promoted to pro personnel assistant in 2003. Martin also interned with the Titans in 2002. 

At Vanderbilt, Martin was named the 2003 Male SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s in human and organizational developmental studies, while also earning a master’s in organizational leadership. 

Martin will bring a different personality than former general manager Chad Bowden, but the expectation is that he will be a dynamic recruiter and knows talent, which is evident from the quick turnaround by the Lions. 

Notre Dame is also still expected to make another hire in regards to leading recruiting efforts for the program.
