2026 WR Mason James Honored By Notre Dame Offer
Mason James has a long list of scholarship offers, but the one he picked up from Notre Dame earlier this month certainly caught his attention.
“It was a really big accomplishment, knowing that Notre Dame is such a historical program,” the 2026 Oklahoma receiver told Irish Sports Daily.
“Even though they just played in the national championship game, they still saw my talent. I guess they feel like they can take that talent and apply it to the next national championship that they go to. It's really just a big blessing for me and my journey.”
The Irish requested the Norman North star’s transcripts and then spoke with his head coach before head coach Marcus Freeman and receivers coach Mike Brown reached out to James directly.
“I love the way that they reached out to my whole entire family and not just me,” James said. “They sat me down and had about a 10, 20-minute talk and really just explained to me what the program's about and how they can use my talent and whatnot going into the future.”
James, who also has offers from schools like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas A&M, Missouri, Kentucky, Washington, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Tennessee, Penn State and Oregon among others.
Now that the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder has the offer from the Irish, he’s excited to learn more about the program and the people inside of it.
“Really just getting to build that relationship more and more,” he said of his next steps with Notre Dame. “I'm looking to get out either to spring practice or an OV here pretty soon. Once I get those dates nailed down, I'll have those out to the public and go from there.
“Really just building relationships with Coach Brown and the OC, seeing how they can use me in their offense and seeing what the other guys on the team have to say about the program. Those are probably just the main keys and seeing how Coach Brown can develop me.”
James already has unofficial visits set to Kentucky, Washington, Missouri and Kansas State this spring and is looking forward to setting up officials.
“I'm really trying to take as many as I can,” he said. “I'm really just going to try to take them all when that open period is.”
He’s hoping to have his final decision before the start of his senior season and comfort will be a huge factor.
“Just feeling comfortable with the staff. I'm not really much of a logo chaser. I'm more about building relationships and wherever I fit in best is where I'm going to be at. If I feel comfortable enough with any wide receiver coach, head coach, and family as a whole, that's the place where I'll be playing at. Distance isn't really a big deal for me. It's really just where my family feels comfortable. They're on my side 100 percent of the way, so wherever they feel comfortable with me and where I feel comfortable that's where I'll make my decision from.”
