Notre Dame receiver Micah Gilbert suffered a broken hand before his spring could really get started, but it has only slightly slowed him down.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore isn’t letting the injury impact his spring as he knows the injury is a small bump in the big picture.
“It was a shock, but it’s getting better each day,” Gilbert stated. “It’s unfortunate that it broke and had to have surgery. I’m still out here with the team recovering, so I’m going to keep it going.”
It’s a basic broken bone, which should take between 6-8 weeks to heal, so Gilbert will be more than ready for fall camp.
The Charlotte native also isn’t letting the injury slow him down as he’s still practicing and developing his game despite being unable to catch.
“I’m still able to run routes, get the mental reps that I need, watch film, stay around he team,” said Gilbert. “Just no ball involved or nothing that can cause harm to your hand.”
Even with the limited time on the field, Gilbert feels and sees that his game has improved from last spring when he arrived on campus.
Gilbert appeared in three games last fall and played 43 snaps. It’s not a lot, but they allowed him to get a feel for the game. The time spent with the varsity during practice also gave him a strong feeling of what life is like week to week over the course of a season.
“Just having a lot of reps under my belt,” Gilbert said of his growth. “I was able to get adjusted to the speed just being around the guys and being in the Irish program. I’ve been able to adjust well and learn the playbook so I can play fast.”
The former Charlotte Christian star made sure to credit his high school program for helping him advance his game before he even got to Notre Dame, which is why he hit the ground running last spring.
“I think I adjusted pretty well,” said Gilbert. “I came from a high school that used a lot of advanced terminology and stuff like that. When I got in, I just had to get adjusted to bigger, stronger and faster guys. I think I adjusted pretty quickly.”
