There has been a ton of recruiting momentum recently for Notre Dame, but fans have been waiting to see that momentum carry over to the receiver position. It’s probably the biggest need in the class for the program.

They got things rolling at the position today with a commitment from Bubba Frazier‍. A player who could add value on gadget plays and in the return game as well, he has the potential to develop into an explosive playmaker for the Irish.

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 177

Projected Position: Receiver

ISD Grade: 92 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 89.8 (4-star)

What he does best:

Frazier can be electric after the catch. If he gets space, he can turn a short pass into a house call.

Frazier has run a 10.69 100m and a 21.76 200m on the track. At the recent Under Armour camp in Atlanta, he was the fastest player in attendance and recorded a blazing 4.43 40. There’s speed and then there is elite speed. Frazier’s speed is elite.

Though he does a lot of work on screens, vertical routes, and when used in the running game, he’s more than just a catch and run player. He does a good job adjusting to the football and tracks the deep ball well.

What he needs to improve:

There are flashes of the kind of route runner he can develop into, but he’s unrefined right now and doesn’t run a diverse route tree. Frazier does a good job of using his speed to set up defensive backs and create separation. He needs to add more nuance and precision in order to get open against the stickier defensive backs he’ll face in college.

What’s his ceiling?

Explosive plays can swing a game and Frazier is an explosive athlete. Though he is undersized at just under 5-10 and 177 pounds, he has the kind of rare speed combined with solid ball skills that can make him a big play threat whenever he touches the football.

He could play the slot or the field at Notre Dame, but should be someone who can be used in a variety of ways on gadget plays as well as potentially be utilized in the return game. He’ll need to develop his total game as a receiver and that may take some time, but even before that happens, he could end up contributing early on in certain packages.

Former Memphis receiver Calvin Austin was also an undersized, but dynamic athlete who developed into a game breaker with 36 receptions of 20+ yards in his final two college seasons. That’s that kind of dynamic that Frazier can provide if he reaches his ceiling.
