It’s early, but Notre Dame is letting Jalaythan Mayfield‍ know that the 2027 North Carolina linebacker is on its radar.

The Irish sent linebackers coach Max Bullough to Lincolnton High School to check in on Mayfield on Monday, the first day they hit the road recruiting this spring.

“He just came to watch me practice,” said Mayfield, who caught up with Bullough later.

“He said it was good to see me out there and he wanted to start the relationship, build that relationship with me and continue to build that relationship by inviting me to the campus and getting me up there to see it.”

Mayfield has an impressive offer sheet that includes schools like North Carolina, Duke, NC State, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State and Ohio State among many others.

Still, the 6-foot-1, 225-pounder was struck by the fact that the Irish had him on their radar.

“It's pretty crazy to think that he could find a small-town kid like me and then make that trip,” he said. “That means a lot to me.”

Mayfield said he will “probably” make his way to South Bend for a visit.

“It's not clear now, but we'll do some planning and organize it with them,” he said.

He isn’t sure about any upcoming visits just yet.

“Nothing's clear as of right now,” he said. “We're just getting information thrown at us, so we're taking it all in and figuring it out.”

When - or if - he does get to South Bend, Mayfield will be looking to see how Bullough and the rest of the Notre Dame coaches get to work.

“They're a pretty good team,” he said. “I was watching last year and they were a pretty good team. But I don't know too much. I'm excited to get to know the program a little more.”

Coaching will be a primary factor when it comes time for him to choose a school.

“Coach relationship, position coach relationship, relationship with head coach as well,” he said of the biggest factors. “A school that's going to take care of me. If there's anything that ever came up that happened, they'll still make sure I get to school and take care of me as well as development.

“A school that'll develop me and not only better me on the field, but better me in the classroom and ultimately develop me to be a great young man.”
