Notre Dame and Micah Shrewsberry have made a key hire for the future of the Irish basketball program.

The program has announced Jon Sanderson will be the program’s next Director of Men’s Basketball Strength and Conditioning.

Sanderson comes to South Bend from a year with the Vanderbilt program, but he spent 15 seasons at Michigan, where he helped lead the Wolverines to over 300 wins and 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

“We are fortunate to add Jon to our basketball staff and Sports Performance team,” Shrewsberry said in a statement. “He is regarded as one of the best strength & conditioning coaches in the country, and his addition is a game changer for our program. We strive to be a program that stresses player development, and Jon’s track record of success at multiple schools makes him an ideal fit.”

The Ohio native also spent time with Clemson, Marshall and North Carolina. Sanderson played basketball at Ohio State (1997-99) and Ohio (2000-02). As a sophomore, Sanderson was a starter on Ohio State’s team that went to the Final Four.

“I’m honored to join Notre Dame as the Director of Men’s Basketball Strength & Conditioning,” Sanderson stated in the release. “Coach Shrewsberry has established a strong foundation and an incredible culture. I truly believe this program is on the verge of taking off. I’ve known Coach Shrewsberry for over 20 years, he’s one of the sharpest minds and most genuine leaders in the game. I’m excited to add another dimension to what’s already being built here. It’s a privilege to help shape the future of Notre Dame Basketball, and I’m fully committed to the mission.”

Sanderson also helped develop over 30 Michigan athletes who made the NBA.

Also of note, Sanderson’s son, 2026 point guard Jonathan Sanderson‍, was offered by Notre Dame in September of 2023 when he played at Saline HS (Mich.). In addition to Notre Dame, the four-star prospect currently holds offers from Creighton, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Marshall, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio, Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Xavier.

Sanderson is also the legal guardian of 2026 big man Gan-Erdene Solongo‍. The 7-foot, 260-pounder holds offers from Arizona State, Butler, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio, Ohio State, Rutgers and Xavier.
