2027 DL Reilly Newman Gaining Momentum After Strong Camp Circuit
2027 Lakota West (Ohio) defensive lineman Reilly Newman has had a productive month on the recruiting front.
The 6-foot-6, 265-pound standout has seen his offer list grow significantly in recent weeks, adding scholarships from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Oregon. He’s also made a strong impression at camps at Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Newman was in South Bend for Irish Invasion and the Irish staff made sure he knew they would remain in contact.
“I think it went well,” explained Newman. “We got in there early, started competing and then we transitioned into the drills. I think it was all great from there. I put a lot of work in and the coaches said that they would keep in touch with me.”
Al Washington and Nick Sebastian are well known for their aggressive approach to camp. They want to make recruits better, so they make sure they push the defensive line during camps. Newman felt that and appreciated the feedback he received from the staff.
“They were making sure that you were staying low,” stated Newman. “They were preaching a low pad level and they always wanted explosive, like quick off the ball, and then reacting was big as well.”
Newman also appreciated testing himself against some quality offensive linemen at the camp in addition to being part of a loaded defensive line group.
“I thought the competition was great,” said Newman. “There were a lot of guys who were ready to work and I thought the energy there was pretty crazy. The coaches said that we had a great camp and I think it went well.”
The Ohio native believes he showed the Irish staff both his current ability and future potential.
“I went in there and competed,” Newman explained. “We did some one-on-ones and I did well on every rep. I thought I showed what I wanted to show and then I think what I'm going to try to work on is bending the corner better and just staying low because it's hard at such a tall frame.”
The Lakota West star saw his recruitment really take off following a strong showing at his school’s combine this spring.
“It all started picking up after our combine day this year,” stated Newman. “I got two offers then and then once I got Oregon, that was really big for me. That's when a lot of coaches started reaching out.”
Notre Dame isn’t a stranger to Lakota West as they’ve signed safeties Ben Minich and Taebron Bennie-Powell in recent years and it’s a place Newman expects to get back to in the fall.
“I'm definitely going to try to be back as soon as possible,” said Newman.
