St. Joseph Regional High School (N.J.) has been a familiar stop for Notre Dame over the years, most notably producing standout running back Audric Estimè. The Irish will be returning to the New Jersey powerhouse once again.

Chaz Gray‍, a 2027 defensive end, earned an offer from Notre Dame following a strong showing at Irish Invasion earlier this month. His younger brother, Tahj, a 2028 linebacker, also left South Bend with an offer.

“It felt amazing,” stated Gray. “I really enjoy this school, all the historic background, all the coaches. I have some bonds with some of the coaches, so it was nice seeing them getting that offer. I really loved everything.”

How did Gray earn the offer? It starts with hard work and being coachable, which defensive line coach Al Washington saw firsthand at Invasion.

“I proved that I'm a hard worker, I can compete, I'm a coachable player and that I love this sport,” said Gray. “I liked all the competition, all the drills, all the experience they showed us. I love how all the players, all the coaches, they have experience with high-level football and teach me the sport and the position of defensive end."

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman also spent time with the Gray family at the post-camp BBQ. During the conversation, Gray and his family reminded Freeman that they’re already familiar with defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who previously coached Chaz’s older brother, KJ, at Rutgers.

“It was good, it was nice seeing Coach,” Gray explained. “We showed him a picture of his DC and my older brother when he was younger. He's very disciplined, he's a good leader. I like how he coaches his people, his staff and his players.”

Gray wanted to get to Notre Dame to earn the offer as he’s well-aware of what the program and university can do for him.

“I like how they play everyone across the country,” said Gray. “They play the best of the best from the South to the North to the East Coast to the West. I want to be able to take my talents everywhere so the NFL can see me.”
