Since being offered by Notre Dame and visiting South Bend this past spring, Chris Whitehead‍ has kept in touch with the Irish.

“Coach Seabass,” the 2027 Virginia edge defender says, referring to Notre Dame defensive line assistant Nick Sebastian. “I've been talking to him.

“He's really just been checking on me and stuff, just making sure that we stay in touch.”

The Lloyd C. Bird High School standout has gained a positive impression of Sebastian during his trip to campus back in April.

“He's a great person,” Whitehead says. “He’s one of the reasons I really like Notre Dame. When I was up there, I was talking to him and I could tell he's genuine. He's a very good guy. I could tell he has no turnoff switch.”

Whitehead picked up his Notre Dame offer on Pot of Gold Day in March. His offer sheet also includes schools like Georgia, Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Miami and Texas A&M among several others.

Though the competition for Whitehead promises to be steep, Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame put themselves in the race with that early unofficial visit.

“It was good,” Whitehead says. “It was really nice. I watched a practice. Practice was very intense, a little bit of fighting.

“I talked to Coach Freeman. He's a very soft-spoken guy with his words and everything. He just touched my heart. It was a good visit.”

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder plans on returning within the next few months.

“I'll probably go up to go see a game,” he says. “I don't know. I'm really going off my dad's work schedule right now, so as of right now, I can't really tell you what's going to happen.

“I’ve kind of already seen most of the stuff. I just want to just get back to watch my position and go back for a game. Just watch a game for real.”

Whitehead has a couple other trips in mind as well, if they can fit his father’s schedule.

“I'm probably going to go to the Ohio State versus Texas game,” he says of the Aug 30th showdown in Columbus. “I don't know about that yet.

“Other than that, I really don't know. I'll probably go see Tennessee. I don't know.”

He does know what he’s looking for in a school.

“It's mostly about my education because football is not forever. I want to make sure I’ve got a good education for when I'm done with football.”
