After throwing at Notre Dame over the summer, Donald Tabron II returned to South Bend for the Irish’s home opener against Texas A&M last weekend.
“It went really well,” the 2028 Michigan quarterback told Irish Sports Daily.
“It was tragic they didn't get out of the game with a win, but they played really hard and they played a really good team.”
The Cass Tech High School star was impressed with the Irish’s balanced offensive approach.
“They have a really good running back with number 24, JD Price, then of course Jeremiyah Love,” said Tabron II. “They have a really good run attack, so they really played a balanced style. Their run game complements the pass.
“I could see myself fitting pretty good because that's what we do at Cass. We have two or three very good running backs at Cass. We try to complement our run with our pass, so they are very similar styles of offense.”
The atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium also impressed Tabron II.
“It was electric,” he said. “After each touchdown, they were tossing the people up and down. I didn't know that was a tradition there. From the little things like that and the energy inside the stadium, it was crazy.”
Prior to the game, he had the chance to speak with Irish quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli, assistant quarterbacks coach Kurt Rawlings and running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider.
“They were saying they'd have to play like the best team to come out with a win,” Tabron II recalled. “Texas A&M was no slouch of a team. They said they were going to to try to play their best football and always competing to be #1.
“In terms of talking to me, just slowly going through every day, becoming 1 percent better every day and just growing towards that as I keep getting older and older.”
Tabron II likes what he’s seen from Guidugli.
“He's a very electric coach,” he said. “He throws with quarterbacks. In the drills, he's very excited and electric when he's with the quarterbacks. You don't really see that many times from a quarterback coach.
“That little difference that he does, at least I haven't seen any other quarterback coach really in the country do that.”
Tabron II already has dozens of offers from schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Pitt, Miami, North Carolina, Auburn, Kentucky and Oregon among several others.
He’s hoping to add Notre Dame to that list one day, but for now, he’s glad to be continuing the process with the Irish.
“Hopefully I can get back up to another game this year,” he said. “It's just really growing our relationship. It's going to be a long recruitment, so we'll be able to build a better relationship and hopefully get the offer in the future and we'll see where it goes from there.”
After visiting Miami this past weekend, he’s headed to Penn State for this weekend’s White Out Game against Oregon.
“That's a game you don't want to miss right there.”
