The foundation of Notre Dame’s 2027 class on offense is starting to take shape. They’ve got their quarterback and just added a key piece on the offensive line with a commitment from offensive tackle James Halter.
He’s a prospect who worked out for the Notre Dame staff at Irish Invasion this summer and the Notre Dame legacy has made significant strides during his junior season. I’m a big fan of Halter as a prospect and love the pickup for the Irish.
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 270
Projected Position: Offensive tackle
ISD Grade: 92 (4-star)
National Average Grade: 90.7 (4-star)
What he does best:
This is Halter’s first season playing offensive line after converting from tight end. He’s an easy mover as an athlete who is light on his feet.
He measured in with 34-inch arms and he utilizes it well. It’s amazing how far along he’s come with his punch since I watched him at Invasion. This snatch and grab against a long arm is not the kind of thing that is normal to see from someone who just made the move to offensive tackle.
He is a finisher in the run game. He moves well as a puller and does a good job getting to the second level. When he locks on, he wants to put a defender in the dirt.
Halter can be a weapon in the screen game and his athleticism makes it possible for him to do anything that is asked of him in a modern college football offense.
What he needs to improve:
It’s pretty much as simple as him lacking experience at the position and typical physical development. Much like current Notre Dame freshman Matty Augustine, it’s pretty clear when seeing him in person that he’ll be fine adding the necessary weight and he’ll already be pretty big by the time he gets to Notre Dame.
What’s his ceiling?
Halter has an extremely high ceiling. He’s an exceptional athlete for the position who recorded a 9-6.7 broad jump during the spring. That’s absolutely elite explosion at his size and position.
He was raw as raw could be when he worked out at Invasion, but how he competed and his improvement over the course of the camp definitely stood out that day. He’s made a huge leap since then and he’s only going to keep getting better.
He reminds me a lot of former Northwestern OT Peter Skoronski when he was a high school prospect, but Halter is longer. Skoronski was a stud at Northwestern and someone that I know that many wish Notre Dame had landed. This is a big time pickup for the Irish.
