There wasn’t SP+ or FEI in 1993. No one was tracking success rate or EPA. There wasn’t access to the same things we have today in order to prove that Notre Dame deserved to be the national champion as the best team in the country. 

All we had was the polls. There was the Associated Press and the Coaches Poll. In the end, who they voted for would decide who got to claim a national championship.

In most years the top two teams didn’t play each other.
