Lance Taylor will tap into the Notre Dame pipeline once again for his latest hire.

This time, Casey McHugh will make the short move from South Bend to Kalamazoo to become Western Michigan’s next safeties coach.

Chris Hummer first.

In 2024, McHugh arrived at Notre Dame from Oklahoma State, where he was a graduate assistant and worked with the linebackers.

McHugh started his coaching career in 2018 as a quarterbacks coach for Delaware Valley before moving to Old Dominion as a graduate assistant. While at ODU, McHugh earned his master’s in engineering while also working with the linebackers and safeties during his tenure.

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute alum holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

Taylor has routinely gone back to South Bend to hire staff for Western Michigan. He hired Chris O’Leary a year ago as his defensive coordinator, but Taylor also added his current defensive coordinator, Greer Martini and cornerbacks coach Nick Coleman from the Notre Dame pipeline.

Western Michigan’s Director of Analytics, Todd Leitschuh, also worked at Notre Dame in the final years of the Brian Kelly era.
