Thomas Davis Jr. has been front and center for Notre Dame for quite some time.

The Charlotte native embraced being the face of the 2026 recruiting class from the moment he committed to the Fighting Irish.

It was intentional. Davis believed that forming relationships early would help ease the transition to Notre Dame, which is now happening with the largest early enrollee class in program history.

“It just allowed me to start forming a leadership role within the class,” stated Davis. “Just trying to keep it together as best as we can. Building relationships with those guys throughout that process really helped. We have a tight-knit class.”

That said, Davis still wanted to be certain Notre Dame was the right fit.

Despite being committed to the Irish, he took one other official visit after receiving a late offer from Georgia, his father’s alma mater.

Some questioned the decision, but Davis felt the visit was necessary to remove any doubt.

“That was late for an offer,” explained Davis. “You’re getting ready to play your senior season and they just come in to offer you. I was going to evaluate the decision, growing up a fan. It just came down to, ‘If I don’t take this official visit, I might wonder forever if that would’ve been the place for me.’

“I was going to take it to be sure because that’s a legacy thing. I took the official visit there, I took one here and I knew immediately this was home.”

Of course, Davis knew his father wanted him in Athens, but the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder was allowed and encouraged to make his own decision.

“In his head, he’s not going to say it, but he wanted me to go to Georgia,” Davis said. “But he was supportive of my decision. Wherever I felt best was where he was going to root for.”

The elder Davis played 15 years in the NFL and had one of the more productive careers at the linebacker position despite several injuries.

Davis had a front-row seat to see what it took to succeed in the league, as well as how to face adversity, which he believes will help him at Notre Dame.

“You kind of come in thinking a certain way, like I’ve grown up learning this and doing this,” said Davis. “Once you get here, it’s actually different because you’re learning a whole lot of new stuff.

“I definitely think it’s going to continue to take time to grow more and learn more with it, but I think I’ve been understanding and processing everything really well.”

So far, the transition has gone smoothly.

Notre Dame’s veteran linebacker room has welcomed Davis and helped accelerate the learning curve.

“We have a great linebacker room,” Davis explained. “Tight-knit. I have a great relationship with Kyngstonn (Viliamu-Asa), great relationship with Drayk (Bowen). From the day I got here, Kyngstonn was bringing me and Ja’Kobe (Clapper) in to watch film. I’ve watched film with Drayk, with Jaiden Ausberry. Those guys are helping out a lot.”

Davis will also wear No. 58 for the Irish, the same number his father wore after sporting No. 0 in high school.

“I don’t think anyone else had it on defense this year,” Davis said. “Being a freshman, you don’t want to step in and try to ask for a single digit. And this number obviously has a legacy meaning to me, so I wanted to ask them for it. It was kind of a no-brainer.”

And yes, the number selection went over well in the Davis household.

“He was super excited,” said Davis. “I’ve always tried to separate myself, to create my own name, even though we obviously have the same one. It was a great feeling being able to honor him in that way and he loved it.”
