Aaron Henry has spent his entire coaching career in Power Four football.

The former Wisconsin defensive back began as a graduate assistant at Arkansas before making stops at NC State, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and most recently Illinois.

Now, Henry is Notre Dame’s newest defensive backs coach after spending the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Fighting Illini.

For the Immokalee, Fla., native, the opportunity to join Marcus Freeman’s staff and reunite with former mentor Chris Ash was one he couldn’t pass up.

“It was something that I felt like I probably would've regretted had I not taken the opportunity,” Henry stated. “Then you talk to Marcus Freeman and you're like, ‘Oh my goodness.’

“I had already obviously known Chris Ash, but you talk to Marcus Freeman, and it's like, ‘OK, wow.’ I could see why this dude has had a lot of success at the age he's at, as a play-caller and a head coach. That kind of sealed the deal.”

While familiarity with Notre Dame’s staff made the decision easier, Henry said the move ultimately came down to growth, both professionally and personally.

“It was something that came about randomly and when I had a conversation with my wife, we felt like it was something that was beneficial for us as a family and just a career path,” said Henry. “I talked to my boss at the time, Brett Bielema and I had his blessing.

“Most people, I think, in those scenarios, there can be a lot of anger and angst. We go back to the time I was 16 years old. That dude's like a father to me and I know he only wants what is best for me.”

Henry steps into a favorable situation in South Bend.

Notre Dame returns what many consider the nation’s top secondary on paper, headlined by All-American corner Leonard Moore. Knowing the room was already thriving, Henry made it a priority to connect with former defensive backs coach Mike Mickens before arriving on campus.

“You're walking into a room that's really talented and I've had the luxury to be around some talented players as well, but the depth that's in this room, the depth along with the talent, I don't think I've ever seen anything like it,” explained Henry. “What I was trying to gather from is how do the guys learn? Are they visual learners? Do they need to get on the board and are they physical learners? They need to get on and write things up.

“I didn't really understand the level of talent in that room until the first day I walked in. Now, after I took the job, I had heard about it, but I didn't understand it until I truly walked in here and I started watching film.”

The Irish will return four established starters in the secondary, along with two of the nation’s top transfers in DJ McKinney and Jayden Sanders.

With a wealth of experience and talent, Henry isn’t looking to overhaul anything. His focus is on refinement and continued development.

“They are really talented and my goal and purpose isn't to change anything,” Henry said. “It's just to help tweak it, help refine it to help try to make it better. That's all I want to do.”

Henry will also oversee the development of Notre Dame’s highly touted freshman defensive back class, which arrived on campus as early enrollees and finished as the nation’s top secondary haul in the 2026 cycle.

“The only one I really knew about was Ayden Pouncey,” stated Henry. “I knew about him in terms of athletic ability. Everybody else, I had no idea about, because we didn't recruit them. There were some big-time guys. We just didn't recruit them.

“I saw how tall they were, how long they were. After the workout, I was in for a treat. I'm like, ‘Oh my gosh. Dang. These dudes are really talented.’ But I think you add that to just how eager they are to learn, and I think that's what makes Notre Dame special.”

The only true question mark entering the season may be the nickel position.

There are several talented options competing for the role, and both spring practice and fall camp will be used to determine the best fit.

Christian Gray, who has started at field corner for the past two seasons, is a candidate to move inside alongside Dallas Golden.

“I think with a guy as talented as him, I think you work him inside, you work him outside,” Henry said of Gray. “You just try to give him the opportunity to just really showcase his ability, showcase his talent.

“We got a couple. Dallas Golden as well. We got a couple of nickel candidates that we're gonna play there. Christian has shown he can play outside, right? May move him inside and see if he can do it. I think it's trying to find the best group of guys who give us the best chance to go out there and have success when we roll out the ball, whether it's spring practice or fall camp or the season.”

Henry has coached several NFL Draft picks, including Devon Witherspoon, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

There is no shortage of NFL talent in the Irish secondary and Henry will roll out his secret weapon at some point to help further their development.

“My secret weapon for developing football players is my wife,” explained Henry. “You laugh, but I'm serious, because my wife is a clinical psychologist. We don't call her Mrs. Henry. We call her Dr. Henry at home. I say she's the secret because I've been able to talk to her about situations and scenarios, and she'll give me a plan, lay out a plan that's like, ‘Oh, I didn't think of that.’ I have the guys over to my house, and she'll sit down with them for five minutes or have a two-minute conversation and pull me aside and say, ‘Hey, you need to make sure he has this, this, and that.’

“That is paramount. That is more important than them knowing a scheme. That is more important than them playing a certain technique, because if you can appeal to their mind and their heart, you've got them as a player.”
