Christian Gray, Notre Dame Secondary Target More Turnovers, Dominance in 2026
Christian Gray isn’t easing into anything this spring. He’s reinventing himself.
Now in his fourth spring at Notre Dame, the veteran defensive back is taking on a new challenge at nickel and it’s already reshaping how he sees the game.
After three years working primarily at field corner, Gray is adjusting to a role on the inside of the defense, which has required a change in mindset.
“It's a little bit like a one-on-one island,” Gray stated. “It's kind of different from corner and everything. It's just a little different because you're just looking at everything. Looking at the whole formation, looking at the receiver and looking at body language. It's a lot of things you gotta look at, but I love it though. It's a lot more action, it's a lot more of me involved in the run game and the pass game."
That added responsibility goes beyond physicality. One of the subtler adjustments has been learning an entirely different route tree and making sure he’s aware of where receivers are lining up.
“I did have to learn about how the receiver is inside and outside the hashes,” explained Gray. “I had to learn that and just the route trees. The route trees were different, but I started to get a feel of it because certain routes, if you're outside the hash, if you're inside the hash, a certain route. I know basically the whole route tree.”
As far as preference, Gray likes the nickel spot for one specific reason.
“That's a good question,” laughed Gray when asked if he liked field or nickel better. “I kinda like inside 'because I just want to hit somebody."
That mentality fits perfectly with a Notre Dame secondary that’s setting a high bar for itself in 2026.
After finishing No. 4 nationally with 21 interceptions last season, the group isn’t shying away from expectations.
“We gotta have a lot more turnovers, a lot more interceptions, a lot more fumbles, a lot more stopping the run game and everything,” said Gray. “I think that will make us elite. We have Tae Tae Johnson, Leonard Moore, Mark Zackery, we got all these guys, all these cats that's so good. We just gotta just catch the ball and just dominate every game. That's how it's gonna make us great."
Perhaps more importantly, the secondary wants to be the backbone of Notre Dame’s defense.
"We just say we wanna be the best and we just gotta go out there,” Gray stated. “Our main priority is really just the team and the defense, just being the heart of it, just the back seven. Some fans are not gonna look at the front line, they're gonna look at how the ball gets caught in the deep. We just gotta be those cats that are gonna deny it. We're just trying to be the elite defense that we can be."
Part of reaching that level means continuing the standard set by those who came before. Gray has embraced a leadership role this spring, mentoring younger defensive backs the same way veterans once guided him.
"We're just trying to teach them the same way we got taught,” explained Gray. “Just teaching them how I got taught from Cam Hart, from B Moe (Benjamin Morrison) and X (Xavier Watts). That's what I'm teaching the young cats and everything.
“I'm teaching that to Chaz (Smith), teaching that to Khary (Adams), all of them. That's what we're just doing. We're just playing history all over again, just telling them everything else."
Gray knows his time in South Bend is winding down and the reality of his final season is starting to settle in. But rather than dwell on it, he’s choosing to appreciate it.
“Every new year is great here,” Gray said. “I’m not going to lie. Every year is great. I love it here. This is a blessing. I’m glad I decided to come here. I’m happy to be here.
“It’s crazy because it's like I'm about to be done with school and I'm going to get a degree from here. It's the greatest feeling and also just knowing I'm gonna have a great year here on the field. It just feels great.”
