Brayden Bonik’s recruitment has taken off nationally, but Notre Dame holds a unique place in the early stages.

The 2028 Texas linebacker picked up an offer from the Irish back in March, adding another major program to an already extensive national offer list.

“It was really big for me,” Bonik told Irish Sports Daily. “Notre Dame is actually one of my dad’s favorite schools because he’s from New York. Growing up, Notre Dame and Penn State were the schools.”

The academic reputation of the program also stood out immediately to the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder.

“It’s a very prestigious school,” he said. “My dad said if he had two choices, that and Stanford would be great places because of the academics.”

Bonik already holds a wide-ranging offer list that also includes Michigan, Georgia, Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee, Penn State and Wisconsin among others.

Notre Dame’s offer came together quickly after initial contact, with linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary playing a key role in the process.

“They reached out and it was about a week-long process,” Bonik said. “I talked to one of the recruiting analysts, then Tim Brown Jr., and then I got on the phone with Coach Jean-Mary. That’s when he offered me.”

That early impression of Jean-Mary resonated.

“I actually liked him a lot,” Bonik said. “I liked his energy. I could tell he’d be a fun guy to play for.”

The Fort Bend Ridge Point standout is now planning a trip to South Bend this summer, where he’ll get a closer look at the program beyond the initial offer.

“I want to get a feel for the campus, how the coaches come off to me and talk to some of the players,” he said.

The Missouri City, Texas, native has already been active on the visit trail this spring with stops at Michigan, Arizona State, Nebraska, Florida, Texas A&M, SMU, Baylor and Houston as he continues to evaluate his options.

Despite the volume of attention, Bonik’s focus remains on identifying programs that prioritize him just as much as he values them.

“I’m more focused on how much a school wants me,” he said.

As he works toward a potential list cut later this summer, several factors will shape Bonik’s decision.

“Coaching stability is big for me. I want to make sure my coach will be there all four years. I like having a family connection with the program. I want a place that will develop me and where my degree has value.”
