Notre Dame just landed one of the top offensive tackles in the country earlier this week. Not many were expecting them to pull off a surprise flip on the O-line a couple of days later, but they just pulled it off with Jackson Hill‍.

Previously committed to UCLA, Hill has the size, frame and nastiness that will fit right in with the offensive line room at Notre Dame.

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 300

Projected Position: Guard

ISD Grade: 87 (3-star)

National Average Grade: 86.3 (3-star)

What he does best:

If you don’t like watching Hill block, then you don’t like football. He brings a relentless mentality to the field.

With an 84 inch wingspan and weight a legit 300 pounds, he’s big and plays big. He’s an imposing individual who wants to finish with his defender in the dirt.

His compete level is outstanding. He’s scrapping to win every rep even when the technique isn’t there.

What he needs to improve:

He has average feet and can be a bit heavy footed. He’ll have to refine his footwork quite a bit because he can get out of control. His pad level needs to get better.

A former catcher in baseball, he can bend and get low, but often pops out of his stance and can let defenders get underneath him. That can be a problem, especially in pass protection when anchoring.

What’s his ceiling?

Hill might not wow anyone with his movement, but seeing some clips and testing from him at the Los Angeles Under Armour camp show he’s a better than average athlete for his size. He ran a 5.21 40 at 300 pounds and an 8-9.2 broad jump is impressive.

He has the frame to play tackle, but I don’t think he has the feet to. His mobility in space isn’t great. However, when I watch Hill play, I think he is in the same mold as Trevor Ruhland and Pat Coogan. He’s a lunch pail player who is going to bring maximum effort.

There may be limitations with him that limit how good he can be, but he’ll have a chance at developing into an effective guard with the proper development.
