2028 Legacy RB Xander Edwards "Excited" By Notre Dame Offer

The offer Xander Edwards‍ had been waiting for finally arrived last weekend.

Notre Dame extended a scholarship to the 2028 Florida running back on Father’s Day, giving the son of a former Irish star an opportunity to potentially continue the family's legacy in South Bend while creating one of the more intriguing recruitments in the cycle.

"I was really excited when I got the offer," Edwards, son of former running back Marc Edwards told Irish Sports Daily. 

"I've been waiting for this offer for a while now. This offer meant the world to me and I'm really excited about it. My dad is really excited about it too. This is just a blessing and I'm really grateful for this opportunity."

The offer came unexpectedly.

Notre Dame general manager Mike Martin called Edwards out of the blue to deliver the news.

"Mike Martin just randomly called me," Edwards said. "I had no idea. He said, ‘We like you. We're going to offer you.’"

The Bolles School star admitted the scholarship carried extra significance because of his family's connection to Notre Dame.

"Just being a legacy, I know how much Notre Dame meant to my dad," Edwards said. "Notre Dame's just a great place in general. Who wouldn't want to go there? It's a great place. 

“You get everything. You get the whole package, education. They give you great opportunities and they have a really good football program. So they have everything there and I just want to honor my dad."

While the offer meant a great deal, it also came after a period of patience.

The Jacksonville native acknowledged it wasn't always easy watching Notre Dame offer other running backs before him, especially given how much the program has meant to his family.

"It was a little frustrating, but I'm just grateful that they came around and finally offered me,” he said.

That frustration hasn't taken the Irish out of the running.

"They definitely still have a chance to get me," he said. 

The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder is plenty familiar with Notre Dame. Beyond his father’s connection to the University, his sister recently graduated from the school.

"I've been to Notre Dame many times," Edwards said. "I know it like the back of my hand a little bit. My dad went there, my sister just graduated from there, so I know Notre Dame pretty well."

Now that the offer is in hand, Edwards plans to continue building relationships with head coach Marcus Freeman and running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider while learning whether Notre Dame is ultimately the right fit.

"I'm going to try to get up to a game and see what it's like," Edwards said. "See if we can build the relationship between me, Coach Freeman and Coach Seider even more and we'll see what happens from there."

Edwards plans to visit Miami, Florida, Georgia and Notre Dame this fall while also hoping to make trips to Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan. He expects to narrow his list to around 10 schools during the middle of the season before announcing a decision around this time next year.

As the recruiting process continues, he already knows what will matter most.

"I want schools that want me the most, like that shows the most interest as I'm their top guy. What school fits me the best, the environment, development and the relationship I have with the coaches, those are big things that I look for. 

“Also, I want to go to a good school. I want to have that educational part that'll help me for life after football and give me opportunities after football."
