It's been just over two years since Notre Dame announced plans to build Jack and Kathy Shields Family Hall, a transformational addition designed to elevate the Fighting Irish football program and enhance athletic performance across campus.
Now, the project is nearing completion and will finally allow Notre Dame to catch up in the facilities arms race, an area where the program had long trailed most schools across the country.
At 150,000 square feet, Shields Family Hall is nearly 50 percent larger than The Gug, giving Notre Dame the space to instantly improve the day-to-day experience for its student-athletes.
The new facility features an actual training table and cafeteria, a state-of-the-art sports medicine and recovery center, expanded nutrition resources, and an augmented reality walkthrough room that allows players to prepare using the latest technology.
Notre Dame will have a new locker room and players' lounge, which means players won’t be sitting on folding chairs in the year 2026.
But while those features grab attention, the vision behind Shields Family Hall has always been centered on one goal: helping Notre Dame football become the best version of itself.
Head coach Marcus Freeman played an active role in the planning process, ensuring the building prioritized player development over recruiting flash.
“Recovery,” Freeman highlighted when asked about what the facility can provide the program. “I’ve already mentioned nutrition. The teaching, the space. There’s the weight room. I mean, it’s all to serve our players.”
Having been a college football player himself, Freeman understands that the best facilities aren't simply impressive; they make it easier for players to maximize their potential every day.
“I was very intentional about it,” said Freeman. “That was one of the strong inputs that I have. I don’t want anything that’s just for recruiting, or that doesn’t serve our players. Make it multi-purpose and it can help them if they utilize it the right way. If it helps you as individuals, it can help our program.”
That philosophy is now becoming reality.
Notre Dame's football team stepped inside its new home for the first time Friday morning, and quarterback CJ Carr gave Fighting Irish fans an early look at what will be one of college football's premier football facilities.
