Notre Dame Finally Has a Football Facility That Matches Its Championship Ambitions
Welcome to modern college football, Notre Dame.
Notre Dame publicly unveiled its new football home, the Jack and Kathy Shields Family Hall, on Friday morning ahead of the program opening fall camp on August 6.
The program desperately needed the upgrade. The Gug simply became too small and outdated to support a national championship-caliber program. From technology and recovery to training and player amenities, Notre Dame was operating at a disadvantage compared to many of its biggest competitors.
A few observations from the 4:20 video Notre Dame released:
- The entrance makes an immediate statement. It's modern, sleek and delivers the type of first impression recruits expect from an elite program. That's exactly what you want the moment someone walks through the doors.
- The locker room checks every box. Players spend countless hours there, so it needed to be among the nation's best. Gone are the folding chairs and cramped layout that Notre Dame preferred not to show recruits. This is a massive upgrade.
- The ping pong table is a nice touch, but will Marcus Freeman take it away if the Irish ever drop a game or two? We’ll see.
- The player lounge is significantly improved. It isn't over-the-top flashy, but that's the point. It's a comfortable space where players can relax, hang out or even take a nap between responsibilities.
- Julio Rodriguez had a space in The Gug to cut hair, but now, he’ll have an actual barbershop inside the facility.
- The training and recovery areas look impressive. The video doesn't provide enough detail to fully evaluate every piece of equipment, but considering how prominently Notre Dame has emphasized these upgrades throughout the project's rollout, it's reasonable to assume they're among the country's best.
- Notre Dame did show off its new recovery pools. It appears they copied something in Michigan’s facility, as they have a walk-through cold pool. It’s impossible to know where this is relative to the practice fields, but Michigan was smart and has it by the door to the practice field, so the players essentially have to walk through it to the locker room.
- The weight room is outstanding. The Gug already featured a quality strength facility, but this one appears noticeably larger. The basketball hoops are a nice addition, and Notre Dame also appears to have borrowed another idea from Michigan and several other programs by installing an indoor conditioning hill. Players probably weren't thrilled to see that.
- Notre Dame didn’t show any offices or even Marcus Freeman’s office, but by all indications, there is space and space to grow. The program had outgrown The Gug several years ago, so having enough space for staffers to work efficiently likely pleases many.
- Dedicated offensive and defensive meeting rooms are a smart addition. Whether those existed in the old facility or not, creating larger collaborative spaces should benefit the coaching staff. It's safe to assume the position meeting rooms also received major upgrades.
- The auditorium has a modern look. The lighting and tiered seating resemble Oregon's setup and create an impressive environment for team meetings.
- The athletic cafeteria may be one of the most important additions. Notre Dame no longer has to bring in catered meals and serve them in a hallway upstairs. Food can now be prepared on site, and players have a true gathering space where they can eat together and simply bond.
Overall, this is one of the premier football facilities in the country.
Yes, it has the bells and whistles recruits expect, but more importantly, it's built to maximize player development and day-to-day efficiency. That's what ultimately matters. For years, Notre Dame was asking players and staff to operate in a facility that no longer matched the standard of the program.
That's no longer the case. Notre Dame now has every resource it needs to remain among college football's elite.
