Khayel Sam Fong-Talia didn't leave Notre Dame thinking about one moment from his first trip to South Bend.
For the 2029 Georgia quarterback, it was the totality of the experience, from the campus and facilities to his time with Marcus Freeman and the Irish staff, that made the visit feel different.
"Notre Dame was very special," Sam Fong-Talia told Matt DeBary of DawgPost recently. "It was my first time up at South Bend and you can just tell there's just a special feeling pouring around the campus. It was a very special feeling."
The 6-foot-2, 234-pounder made the trip in June to participate in Irish Invasion, giving him his first opportunity to experience Notre Dame since adding an offer from the Irish in May.
The South Forsyth High School standout had an opportunity to work directly with Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli during camp, but his experience extended well beyond the football field.
One of the most significant parts of the trip was spending time with Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman alongside his family.
"Getting to meet with Coach Freeman, with just me and my family with him, it was very, very special," Sam Fong-Talia said. "They were so welcoming."
Sam Fong-Talia also appreciated getting to know Notre Dame assistant defensive line coach Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, particularly because of their shared Polynesian heritage.
"Coach Myron Seumaninoa Tagovailoa-Amosa helps with the other side of football," Sam Fong-Talia said. "It’s definitely cool to see another Polynesian coach out there. I can't talk enough good things about them because it was very special being up there."
His time with Guidugli was equally important.
Sam Fong-Talia came to South Bend wanting to learn more about the coach he could eventually play for and left encouraged by the way Guidugli and offensive analyst Kurt Rawlings worked with him.
"Coach Gino was amazing," Sam Fong-Talia said following the June visit. "Definitely the type of coach I would want to work with day in and day out."
He also appreciated the individual attention he received during the workout and Guidugli's ability to communicate corrections in a way he could immediately apply.
"It was great work and I feel the feedback was communicated very effectively," Sam Fong-Talia said at the time. "It was very easy to take in and be able to fix it on the next rep."
When Sam Fong-Talia looks back on the experience, no single part of the trip separates itself from the rest.
"I didn't think there was just one wow moment to me, but I think the overall experience, the facilities, the campus, coaches, just all of it was very special," he said. "I feel like there wasn't one thing better than the other, but it was just all very special."
Notre Dame's campus also made a significant impression.
Sam Fong-Talia visited the Grotto and appreciated the relatively small size of the university, believing the environment could allow him to remain focused on what he wants to accomplish in college.
"The campus was very beautiful," he said following the trip. "I got to see the Grotto and the different cultural aspects of it. It was very peaceful."
The Irish will have another opportunity to build on that initial impression.
Sam Fong-Talia and his family are already targeting a return to South Bend for Notre Dame's home matchup against Miami this fall.
"We are definitely going to try to make the Notre Dame/Miami game," he said.
The return would give Notre Dame another important opportunity in a recruitment that has already attracted considerable national attention. Sam Fong-Talia's offer sheet includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and several others in addition to Notre Dame.
He has been particularly familiar with Georgia after making multiple trips to Athens this year, but isn't looking to rush his recruitment.
After transferring from Dillon High School in South Carolina to South Forsyth, Sam Fong-Talia is focused primarily on his upcoming sophomore season. He threw for 2,315 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for another 230 yards and five scores as a freshman last fall.
For now, Sam Fong-Talia expects to begin narrowing his recruitment after his sophomore season, potentially working toward a decision sometime around the following summer.
