Mike Brown's first real conversation with Jayce Halasz gave the 2028 Washington receiver plenty to think about.
Notre Dame's wide receivers coach extended an offer during that call late last month and began laying out how he believes Halasz could fit into the Irish program.
“He was just introducing himself,” Halasz told Irish Sports Daily. “It was our first time getting on the phone, so just getting a little introduction, telling me what he sees in me and my fit for the program in the future.”
The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder came away impressed with Brown personally and as a coach.
“Super straightforward,” Halasz said. “He’s got a good sense of humor. He kind of matches my humor a little bit. He's really knowledgeable. He knows what he's talking about.”
The Graham-Kapowsin standout added the Irish to a list that includes Alabama, Oregon, Washington, USC, Stanford, Wisconsin, Utah, Cal and Oregon State among others.
Now, the Graham, Wash., native is ready to take the next step with Notre Dame by seeing the program in person.
“Definitely getting down there for a game this fall and just getting a sense for the staff and how the program is run over there and seeing the college game day atmosphere,” Halasz said.
He's already locked in a date to be in South Bend when Notre Dame hosts Miami on Nov. 7.
“I heard there's 9,000 students at Notre Dame, so seeing how loud they can get and seeing what the atmosphere is like on that campus,” he said.
Notre Dame will be one of several programs Halasz evaluates in person this fall.
He is scheduled to visit Cal on Sept. 5, Oregon State on Sept. 19, Clemson on Oct. 3, Oregon on Oct. 10, Alabama on Oct. 24, USC on Oct. 31, Notre Dame on Nov. 7 and Wisconsin on Nov. 27. He'd also like to fit in a trip to Washington.
“I got a whole tour going on, so I got a lot to do,” Halasz said.
Those trips will be critical as Halasz begins deciding which programs deserve a closer look later in his recruitment.
“A big thing for me is just getting the atmosphere of a place and seeing if it's the right fit for me and if I like what's going on there,” he said. “So that'll definitely determine me narrowing it down after my junior season.”
Halasz expects to use the first half of 2027 to come to a final decision.
“It'll either be after my junior season or about this time next year before my senior year,” he said of when he could make his commitment.
