2028 RB Jayshawn Mitchell Working On First Notre Dame Visit
When Notre Dame offered Jayshawn Mitchell in June, his relationship with the Irish was just beginning.
A little more than two months later, the 2028 Texas running back is hearing from Notre Dame regularly and trying to arrange his first trip to South Bend.
Mitchell recently spoke with Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and Director of Recruiting Carter Auman about making the trip. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder has also remained in contact with Notre Dame running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider.
"It's very exciting," Mitchell told Irish Sports Daily. "I feel like they're a really good team, really good football team, and they can probably make a good run this season in the College Football Playoffs. I really think that's good.
“I'm really excited. It's really exciting to hear from them a lot."
The Brennan High School standout also has offers from schools like Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Wisconsin, UCLA, Kansas State, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and SMU among others.
Mitchell would like to add Notre Dame to an already busy fall travel schedule, although the San Antonio native isn't sure whether his high school schedule will allow it.
"I'm trying to get up there, but I'm not sure if I would have a game that day because it's like a playoff type of thing, so I'm just not sure," he said.
If Mitchell can make the trip, he'll be particularly interested in getting a closer look at Seider and the Irish running backs.
"I would definitely want to see how they use their running backs," Mitchell said. "They're known for their running backs because they had J-Love and Jadarian Price there, but I want to see how they use their running backs and I want to see how Coach Seider coaches them. That's pretty much it."
Mitchell's interest in Notre Dame's running back development isn't new. When the Irish offered him in June, he immediately pointed to Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price as part of what made the offer exciting.
He's continued getting to know Seider since then and has also gotten a look at how the Irish assistant works with his players.
"He's a pretty good dude," Mitchell said. "I've seen videos of him coaching and stuff, so it looks like he's been working new running backs out hard and I really like that."
Notre Dame isn't the only program Mitchell hopes to get a closer look at this fall.
He has visits to Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas A&M locked in and is also trying to find room for trips to Alabama and Ole Miss.
