Notre Dame and Nebraska have announced a two-game series set for 2032 and 2033.
The Fighting Irish will travel to Lincoln on October 30, 2032, marking Notre Dame’s first trip to Nebraska since 2001. The Cornhuskers won that matchup 27-10.
Notre Dame will then host Nebraska on October 29, 2033. The last time the two teams met in South Bend was in 2000, with the Irish falling 27-24.
The two programs have met 16 times, with Nebraska holding an 8-7-1 edge. Notre Dame, however, is 3-1 at home against the Cornhuskers.
INITIAL THOUGHTS
It’s hard to get overly excited about a series that doesn’t start until 2032, but it’s even harder to get excited about Notre Dame scheduling another bottom feeder.
Yes, Nebraska has tradition. Yes, Nebraska has a history of being one of the premier programs in college football.
But that hasn’t been the reality for quite some time.
The Cornhuskers haven’t won 10 games in a season since 2012 and have finished below .500 eight times since their last double-digit-win season.
If Notre Dame’s program is in the same place it is today when this series rolls around, playing Nebraska is a pretty smart move.
Nebraska remains a recognizable name, so there is probably a little more value in scheduling the Cornhuskers than there is in scheduling a program like Purdue. At the same time, Notre Dame isn't exactly signing up for a guaranteed heavyweight matchup.
Of course, a lot can change in six years.
Nebraska could be a completely different program by 2032. There is plenty of time for the Cornhuskers to find the right coach and build a roster, but they’ve failed to do so to this point in the NIL era.
Until Nebraska actually shows signs of life, there’s not much reason to assume it will suddenly become a national contender.
Give Nebraska credit for one thing. The Cornhuskers aren't scared to come to South Bend in October. (That’s a far cry from another Big Ten program)
Right now, this feels like another case of Notre Dame adding a recognizable name without much certainty that the game will actually be a marquee matchup.
As of now, Notre Dame is set to play Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Navy, Nebraska, USC and Wake Forest in 2032.
In 2033, Notre Dame is currently expected to play Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Louisville, Michigan, Nebraska, Pitt, USC and Virginia Tech.
