BREAKING: Ashton White Leaves Football Program

Irish Sports Daily has learned from multiple sources that junior defensive back Ashton White is longer with the football program.

Sources close to the situation believe White will stay to get his degree from Notre Dame and then use a graduate transfer to play his remaining two seasons of eligibility.

White is enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters and is a Political Science major.

The 5-foot-10, 197-pounder redshirted in his freshman season at Notre Dame with classmates Josh Barajas, Trevor Ruhland, Asmar Bilal, Elijah Taylor, Tristen Hoge, Brandon Tiassum, Shaun Crawford, Micah Dew-Treadway, and Miles Boykin.

White will join Bajaras (Illinois State), Hoge (BYU), Jalen Guyton (North Texas), Bo Wallace (Arizona State), and Mykelti Williams (Syracuse) as members of the 2015 recruiting class who have left the program.

In 2016, White appeared in six games for the Irish in primarily a special teams role. The Washington D.C. native recorded two tackles on the year.

The former Bishop McNamara (Md.) star finished his senior season with 58 tackles, two interceptions, and helped Mustangs to their first playoff berth in five seasons.

White committed to Notre Dame over Boston College, Maryland, Ohio State, and Virginia in July of 2014.

Didn't he decommit from VT, or am I thinking of someone else? It's a shame because he showed a lot of promise in high school. He just never did anything at all at ND. During spring practice I don't think he was mentioned once, either by the coaches or mods here. Good luck to him. Glad he's getting his degree.

Too bad, he was someone that really wanted that ND offer so I was always rooting for him. But he's not a bad football player, so I take it as a good sign that he couldn't get on the field.

So would he pay for one year at ND and possibly end up after 5 years with an ND degree and a two year masters degree from another institution ? That would be pretty good.

Good luck to Ashton he will wind at a lower level program with a chance to really prove himself. He was not going to be in the two deep here. The guys we are losing are players that the coaches were not relying on.

I'd like to know this, too. It would make sense for ND to keep him on scholarship only if he spent a significant amount of time contributing to the team...which he wouldn't be able to do if he's serious about lofty academic goals during the Fall semester.

For lack of better wording, they are paying him to go away. Sorta like when a baseball team pays for 1/2 of a players salary when they trade that player to another team. It saves them some money and opens up a spot on the roster for younger players. They made this deal with him because he's close enough with summer school and fall semester to graduate early. You want him focused 100% on classes and getting out by Christmas so that scholarship is open for spring semester.

Dude is a class act. Just read "Nothing but grateful." And let's not get upset over losing a midget DB. Dude is 5'10". Rare-these-days is any receiver sub-6'. That is immediate trouble. Let's upgrade from his classy withdrawal. GO IRISH!
