Notre Dame offered Valley Christian (Calif.) defensive back D’angelo Mckenzie in April, and the four-star prospect had no words to express his feelings.

On Monday, the 6-foot, 180-pounder will get his first look at Notre Dame and is looking forward to linking up with area recruiter Brian Polian.

“I really like the school, and I wanted to get out there to see it,” Mckenzie told Irish Sports Daily. “I spoke to Coach Polian, and he’s looking forward to giving me a tour to see how I like the atmosphere at Notre Dame.”

Polian has built a strong relationship with Mckenzie over the last three months, and it’s paid off.

“It’s a good relationship right now,” explained Mckenzie. “He’s straight-forward with me and keeps it real. I really like that about him.

“Coach Polian has definitely shown more love than other coaches recruiting me.”

Defensive coordinator Mike Elko has also kept in touch with Mckenzie and made sure he stopped by Valley Christian during the Spring Evaluation Period.

“I have spoken with the defensive coordinator, and he came to my school too,” Mckenzie said.

When Mckenzie was offered, UCLA and USC looked like the teams to beat, but heading into next week’s visit, the Irish have made up ground.

“UCLA has always been in the running,” stated Mckenzie. “I haven’t been talking to the coaches that much, so there hasn’t been much of a connection. I am really leaning towards Notre Dame.

“It’s coming up to the time I am ready to make a commitment. I think Notre Dame could be that school, but I have to play it safe too.”

Mckenzie’s parents are more than fine if he ends up in South Bend and he is looking forward to seeing if Notre Dame is the place for him.

“I don’t really have any insight on what it’s going to be like,” said Mckenzie. “I heard it’s really beautiful up there. I think I will like it when I get up there.”

“I am looking to feel comfortable at Notre Dame.”
