Notre Dame cruised to a 34-10 week one win over the Temple Owls on a beautiful South Bend afternoon.

Saturday marked the official start to the Brandon Wimbush era and he sure didn’t disappoint in his first game as the Irish starting quarterback.

Rick Kimball/ISD
DAZZLED: Wimbush completed 23 of 26 passes for 296 yards and 4 touchdowns against less than stellar Temple defense. The junior quarterback would have had a fifth touchdown pass, but freshman tight end Brock Wright’s knee was determined down at the one-yard line.

Notre Dame fans immediately saw fireworks from Wimbush as he hit receiver Miles Boykin for a 61-yard scoring strike on the second play of the game. From there, Wimbush connected with Equanimeous St. Brown, Tony Jones Jr., and Durham Smythe for touchdowns.

The New Jersey native also added 65 yards on the ground on just 6 carries.

FRAZZLED: Mike Elko’s defense was looking at holding Temple without a touchdown to open the season, but freshman safety Isaiah Robertson tripped in his backpedal to let Mike Frank get behind him for an Owl score with just 42 seconds left in the game.

SNEAKY GOOD: The day was about turnovers as Notre Dame forced four on the day. The performance of Jay Hayes might get lose in the excitement of seeing the Irish defense attack the football.

The senior defensive end recorded six tackles, two tackles for loss, including stuffing Temple running back Eric Diamond at the one-yard line on 4th-and-goal.

TURNING POINT: Notre Dame started with an explosive plays on offense, but it was junior safety Nick Coleman’s interception in the second quarter that flipped the game.

Trailing 14-0, Temple had driven to the Notre Dame 40-yard line and decided to take a shot deep off playaction. Coleman didn’t bite and picked the ball off down the seam to end the scoring threat.

KEY STAT: The Irish rushed for 252 yards and averaged 6.7 yards per carry on the day. Josh Adams led the Irish with 112 yards on 12 carries, while sophomore Tony Jones Jr. made his Notre Dame debut with 77 yards on 8 carries.
